Sweet and short birthday wishes for a friend
The honest, lightly-warm ones, plus the short ones for when the card has space for two lines or you're typing a text on the morning of. These work for the friends in the middle of your circle, closer than acquaintances and not in best-friend territory. Aim for one specific detail per line where you can. If you're stuck on what to put inside the actual card, the full guide to what to write in a birthday card covers the longer formats; this list is for the short, on-the-card line.
- Happy birthday to a friend who always texts back, even when it's a wall of text.
- Glad we became friends. It's one of the better accidents of my life.
- Another year, same great taste in people. You befriended me, after all.

- Having you around makes everything else slightly easier. Happy birthday.
- You are a kinder person than the average, and we've all been the beneficiaries. Happy birthday.

Funny birthday wishes for a friend
The funny ones are easier with friends than with anyone you work with. You don't have to second-guess whether the joke lands. The one rule I keep coming back to: aim at the year, the calendar, the situation, not at the person. Inconvenient opinion incoming: age jokes are riskier than people think. They land in about a third of the friendships I've tried them in and quietly hurt in the other two-thirds. Read the room before you reach for the knee joke.
- Happy birthday. You've reached the age where you start telling people 'I went to bed at 9' like it's a flex.
- Another year of you tolerating my opinions. Genuinely heroic work.
- Happy birthday. I'd say something inspiring, but you'd ask me to stop.
- Wishing you a birthday with zero unwanted advice. Yours is exempt.
- Let's celebrate by you actually finishing the show you started six months ago.
- Another year, somehow. The math doesn't care that you don't want to be older.
- Wishing you a year with fewer group chats and more naps. You've earned it.
- Congrats on still being mostly the same person, give or take a haircut.
- Happy birthday from someone who knows exactly which photos to never post.
- Cheers to your annual reminder that time exists and won't be argued with.
- Happy birthday, and many more years of pretending you understand wine.
- Same shoes, another lap. Have a brilliant day.
- Your reward for surviving another year is more responsibilities. Sorry about that.
- Wishing you cake, a quiet evening, and a notable lack of LinkedIn messages.
- You've aged like a fine cheese, which is to say you have your own particular smell and people either love you or have strong opinions.
Birthday wishes for an old friend you reconnected with
This one has its own rules. You haven't been close for a while, but you're back in each other's lives, and the card is a chance to mark that without making a meal of it. Don't apologise for the gap. Don't pretend it wasn't there either. Acknowledge it once, lightly, and write the wish for the friendship you have now. I sent one of these to a college roommate in September after eleven silent years and her reply was just a thumbs-up and a photo of her dog. It was great.
- Happy birthday. Reconnecting with you was the best thing about this year.
- Funny how someone I knew at twenty-two has somehow become someone I need to know at thirty-seven.
- Years off, picked right back up. Happy birthday, old friend.
- Distance does interesting things to friendship. Yours has come out the other side better.
- It took us longer than it should have to find each other again. Glad we did.
- You're proof that some friendships are paused, not ended.
- The years in the middle were noisy. This one feels right.
- There is something quietly relieving about an old friend you don't have to update from scratch.
- Wishing you a brilliant year, and many more conversations like the one we had last month.
- Turns out being friends in our thirties is even better than it was in our twenties.
- You knew who I was before I did. Glad you're back around to see the rest. Happy birthday.
- It's been good having you in my life again.
- Funny how the friendships that pause are sometimes the ones worth restarting.
Birthday wishes for a new friend
New-friend cards have an opposite risk from old-friend ones. You don't want to overclaim intimacy you haven't earned. Be warm, brief, and forward-looking. 'Glad we're getting to know each other' is honest and lands well. Save the long paragraphs for the friendships that have a few years under them.
- Short notice, but I wanted to say it: I'm glad we crossed paths.
- Looking forward to more years of this becoming a tradition.
- Early days, but I already know this friendship is one of the good ones.
- You've made my last few months noticeably better.
- Glad to be at the start of this friendship rather than the end of it.
- I'm new to your life, but I'm rooting for it.
- It doesn't take long to know a good one when you meet them.
- Hope your year is kind.
- Early friendship, already a good one.
- From the newest member of your circle: happy birthday.
- Quietly grateful you let me in.
- I'm enjoying figuring out who you are.
- Early days, but I can already tell I'll be glad I met you.
- Wishing you a great year, and a few more friendship milestones.
Birthday wishes for a friend going through a hard year
The most useful kind of card, and the one most people get wrong by overcorrecting in either direction. Don't be falsely cheerful, and don't dwell on the difficulty. Acknowledge it once, with restraint, and offer a small honest hope. A line like 'You've earned an easy one' or 'hope this year is kinder than the last' is worth more than ten lines of forced upbeat wishing. If the friend is grieving someone, the longer-form guide on what to say when someone dies is better than anything in this list. If they're recovering from something, get well soon messages may land better than birthday wishes.
- Hope this year is kinder than the last. You've earned an easy one.
- Small reminder that I noticed the year was hard, even if you didn't say.
- A year that returns the energy you've been putting in.
- Sending the kind of warmth that doesn't ask you to perform back.
- Wishing you a year that finally lets you catch your breath.
- You've carried a lot. Hope today's a small break from it.
- Rooting for a quieter chapter.
- A year that doesn't ask quite so much of you.
- You've been a steady person through a year that wasn't. I noticed.
- Hoping this birthday is the start of an easier stretch.
- I'm in your corner whether the year ahead is easy or not.
- The kind of year that lets you put a few things down. That's what I'm hoping for you.
- Sending warmth, not platitudes. You know the difference.
- Hope today's a small good day in a year that's needed more of those.
- If I could engineer you twelve uneventful months, I would. Wishing them anyway.
Turn it into a group card
If it's a milestone year, or your friend is heading into a hard stretch, or you just want them to feel a little surrounded, the move is a card the whole circle signs. A group birthday card online means everyone gets to add their own line without phone trees or printed cards. You can create a card online in a couple of minutes and set the delivery for the morning of the birthday. For the closest friend in the group, birthday wishes for a best friend goes deeper on the heartfelt end; for a coworker who's crossed over into friendship, birthday wishes for a coworker will get the tone right.
One last thing, off-topic. The shoebox is now in my own closet, in a different city, and I still haven't thrown out a single card from it in the years since. The ones I drafted carefully and almost didn't send are in there too. Nobody has ever told me their card was too short, or too plain, or too much of an inside joke. Whichever line you pick, send it. The not-sending is the only real mistake.
